For many people, September is back-to-school month, and back-to-work month from August vacations. But for families with a child with cancer, there is no vacation from the circuit of doctors, treatments, and sickness. Back to school often includes home schooling, or lessons from the hospital room. Yes, many kids with cancer go to school, but the nurse is on speed dial and becomes more known to cancer parents than any other teacher. Some facts:
- Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S.
- 3 out of 5 childhood cancer survivors will suffer late-effects of treatment such as diabetes, secondary cancers, organ failure and learning disabilities
- Almost half of childhood and young adult cancer fighters face malnutrition due to tumor and treatment
Why? Perhaps because less than 4% of the U.S. governments TOTAL FUNDING for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer.
